Seminar “In-Depth Study of Asana and Pranayama”

Unzent (near Toulouse), 16–19 July 2026

This four-day seminar will be devoted to an in-depth study of asana and pranayama.

It is believed that Gorakshanath, the founder of the Natha Tradition, established and developed the hatha-yoga now practiced throughout the world. Well-known texts such as the Hatha Yoga Pradipika, Gheranda Samhita, and Shiva-samhita belong to the yoga-masters of the Natha Tradition. These works place great emphasis on the practice of asana and pranayama, and on the transformation of the body. It is also significant that the northern Nath Tradition is connected to the South Indian tradition of the Tamil Siddhars. In that tradition, deha-abhyasa (tarapadam, meypadam) has been preserved to this day as a practice of dynamic exercises aimed at psycho-physical development.

During the seminar, Guru Yogi Matsyendranath Maharaj will explore how deha-abhyasa (dynamic exercises) develops into asana and then into pranayama. He will also explain the relationship between breath, meditation, and these three elements.
